Rules of Connect 4
Connect 4 is a fast alignment game played on seven columns and six rows. Every disc falls to the lowest open space, so each move changes the possibilities above it.
The objective
Connect four of your discs in one unbroken line.
01 · Connect 4
Begin with an empty 7 × 6 grid.
Red moves first. Red and Yellow then alternate dropping one disc at a time into any column that is not full.
02 · Connect 4
Every disc falls to the lowest opening.
You choose a column rather than a row. The disc settles directly above the highest disc already in that column, or on the bottom row when the column is empty.
A full column is not a legal move.
03 · Connect 4
Build lines in three directions.
A winning line can be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. More than four connected discs still counts—the line only needs to contain at least four.
04 · Connect 4
Create two threats at once.
A single threat can usually be blocked. Strong moves create two different winning drops for the next turn while avoiding a supporting move that lets the opponent win immediately.
05 · Connect 4
Four wins; a full grid draws.
The game ends as soon as a move completes a line of four. If all 42 spaces fill without a winning line, the match is a draw.
